PORTFOLIO ANALYSIS

In BCG Matrix, each SBU fall in to one of the four cells called: Question Marks, Stars, Cash Cows and Dogs.

Question Marks
Question marks are low-share business with high-growth markets. They require a lot of cash to hold their share. Management has to think hard which question marks to build into star and which ones to phase out.
STRATEGY: Build market share or harvest/digest.

Stars
Stars are high-growth, high-share businesses or products. The often need heavy investment to finance their rapid growth. Eventually their growth will slow down and, they will turn into cash cows.
STRATEGY: Hold or invest or growth.

Cash Cows
Cash cows are low-growth, high-share business or products. These established and succeed SBUs need less investment to hold their market share. They produce a lot of cash that the company uses to pay its bills and to support other SBUs that need investment.
STRATEGY: Hold or add market share.

Dogs
Dogs are low growth, low share business and products. They may generate enough cash to maintain themselves but do not promise to large sources of cash.
STRATEGY: Harvest/divest.

DATA EXAMINATION

Graphical Examination
- Histogram and The Normal Curve
- Stem and Leaf Diagram
- Scatter Plot

Missing data:
- Systematic (affected by researcher or respondent)
- Random (occurs naturally)
Researcher’s concern = to identify the patterns and relationships underlying the missing data.

Outlier = distinctively different data (can be identified by box plot), probably caused by:
- Procedural error
- Extraordinary event

Multivariate testing assumptions:
- Normality (e.g. normal probability plot)
- Linearity
- Homoscedascity
- Non correlated errors

Data can be transformed, dummy variable can be created. Multicollinearity (http://www.nd.edu/~rwilliam/stats2/l11.pdf) should be avoided.

The third class of this term has been for us to refresh our memory (if there was any, hahaha…) about basic definitions on multivariate analysis previously learnt in mathematics (matrix algebra – vector, matrix, distance, inverse, singularity) and statistics (variance, covariance, corelation, t-test, hotelling).

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) System = Maintenance Prevention (MP) + Preventive Maintenance (MP) + Maintainability Improvement

TPM involves total participation of all employee (not limited only to labor).

To increase effectiveness = ZERO INVENTORY, ZERO LOSS.

TPM main features:
-Activities to maximize effectiveness
-Autonomous maintenance by operator
-Company-led small group activities
